How do I determine my Course Handicap?
Your course handicap is the USGA's mark that indicates the number of handicap strokes a player receives from a specific set of tees at the course being played to adjust his/her scoring ability to the common level of scratch or 0-handicap golf. To determine your course handicap, you need two things: your USGA Handicap Index and the Course Handicap Table for the course you will be playing. Your USGA Handicap Index is expressed as a number taken to one decimal place, and is used for conversion to a Course Handicap. You can find your USGA Handicap Index online at www.GHIN.com. Remember, this index is not your course handicap! Once you have this index number, you can determine your course handicap for a specific course by applying the index to the course handicap table for that course. These tables are posted in the clubhouse of the course you are playing and are broken down by the different sets of tees available at the course; i.e. if you are playing from the blue tees, you would use the table for the blue tees. A player's Course Handicap is expressed as a whole number of strokes. The Newton Commonwealth Course Handicap Tables for both Men (blue tees) and Women (red tees) are listed below:

WHAT IS EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL?
Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) sets a maximum number of strokes that a player can post on any one hole. The maximum number of strokes you can take is dependent on your Course Handicap (see table to the right). Remember, before posting any scores you must adjust your hole scores (actual or probable) when they are higher than your maximum number you can post. ESC was designed for the purpose of making handicaps more reflective of a player's potential scoring ability.

How do I enter my scores into the system for rounds I play at Newton Commonwealth?
No matter what course you play, when you play a round of golf and record your score, you are responsible for entering that score into the GHIN system. Before starting to enter you score into the GHIN computer, you must first 'adjust' your score. As discussed above under 'Equitable Stroke Control', there is a maximum score you can record on any given hole based on your handicap. If you are a 15 handicap and shoot a round of 84 that includes an '8' on a hole, the maximum score you can take is a '7' so your adjusted score will be an 83. It is the adjusted score that is entered into the GHIN system. (Note: If you do not have a handicap established yet you should enter your unadjusted score). To do this, you will need to know your Local Number. This Local Number is a 3 or 4 digit number used to identify the number of members of the NCIC, and it is different from your GHIN number. You can find your local number on the listing posted on the bulletin board. When you use the GHIN computer at Newton Commonwealth you first enter your Local Number and the system will bring up your scoring history. You enter your adjusted score, and you will be asked whether or not you want to change any of the 'default' information (date, tees played from, slope, and rating). If you played the round at Newton Commonwealth, there should be no need to change anything. Just enter the score and the system will accept it and that's it. You must still put the completed scorecard in the scorecard box because spot checks will be done by the handicap committee. Instructions, along with a sample card, are posted on the box to guide you in completing the card.

How do I enter my scores for rounds played at another course?
You can enter your score from another course in one of two ways. You can enter it at the course you played at by using your GHIN number and entering the GHIN system at the course you are visiting, or you can return to Newton Commonwealth and enter it in the GHIN system there using your local number. Since you are still responsible for placing your scorecards in the scorecard box at Newton Commonwealth, it is probably easier to enter the score from another course at the Newton Commonwealth. The process is similar to entering a score from a round at the Commonwealth, but a few things will be different. First, you must adjust your score based on your handicap, as described above. Equitable stroke control standards are the same regardless of what course you play. In addition to adjusting your score, you must also make sure the slope and rating for the course you played is on the scorecard; you will need this to enter your score. Once back at Newton Commonwealth, you enter your local number in the GHIN computer and bring up your scoring history. You enter your adjusted score form the other course, and you will be asked if you want to change any of the 'default' information. The answer is YES, and this is where you will enter the date you played the round, the slope for the course you played, and the rating for the course you played. After making those changes, the adjusted score is entered and the scorecard is dropped into the scorecard box.

Do I have to submit scorecards for every round I play?
A Local Rule states that in order to be eligible to compete in any NCIC tournament, you must submit scorecards for every round of golf you play. Each individual player is responsible for making sure the scorecard is correct and submitted. The scorecard must be submitted no later than one week following the completion of the round. Failure to comply with this policy will result in a warning for the first offense and loss of eligibility to compete in any NCIC sponsored tournament for the second offense. Any player losing his/her eligibility, will lose that eligibility for any future tournaments and will not be allowed to compete in any NCIC tournaments for which he/she may have already qualified (e.g. NCIC Shootout) or any year-long tournaments (e.g. NCIC Team Match Play).

When does the 2007 Handicap Season begin?
The 2007 Handicap Season officially starts on March 29, 2007 and ends on November 2, 2007 (scores must be posted for rounds played between these dates). An individual's handicap index is updated according to a revision schedule set by the MGA Member Services department. A total of 13 revisions are conducted annually in Massachusetts. A club handicap chairperson and/or golf professional is able to submit individual scoring records on the "transmit by" dates indicated below. The information submitted by the clubs will take effect and will appear on GHIN.com on the "revision effective date." The handicap revision schedule is as follows:

What is the USGA Course Rating?
The USGA Course Rating is an evaluation of the playing difficulty of a golf course for scratch golfers under normal course and weather conditions. It is expressed as strokes taken to one decimal place, and is based on yardage and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring ability of a scratch golfer.

Newton Commonwealth Course Rating (2007):
Blue Tees (Men): 65.8
White Tees (Men): 64.5
Red Tees (Women): 65.1

What is the USGA Slope Rating?
The USGA Slope Rating is an evaluation of the relative playing difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers. The lowest Slope Rating is 55, the highest 155. A golf course of standard playing difficulty would have a USGA Slope Rating of 113.

Newton Commonwealth Slope Rating (2007):
Blue Tees (Men): 123
White Tees (Men): 117
Red Tees (Women): 112
