New White Birch Tee Boxes

The WHITE BIRCH TEE BOXES at the Shattuck are designed for the first time Shattuck golfer, senior golfers, longer hitting lady golfers and higher handicap golfers.  A bit shorter than the WHITE tee boxes and a bit longer than the RED and GOLD tee boxes, this beautiful new combination of tee boxes offers majestic views, awesome fairway angles and fun around every corner.

The tees aid the course by changing the traffic patterns of casual visitors.  Increased enjoyment and satisfaction should encourage repeat business and counter the stereotype of "The #$%*! Shattuck."

Although many who visit our club do not post their scores because they score so poorly, The White Birch Tees have become so popular that there is now a GHIN rating of 66.3 and a slope of 128.  "Play the White Birch Tees" has the potential to become the "word-of-mouth" advice for visiting and enjoying The Shattuck.

The White Birch Tees were developed in collaboration by our members and staff to increase enjoyment of the Shattuck for the average golfer.  They provide an enjoyably enhanced Shattuck experience and, while retaining the character of The Shattuck, they present a softer face.  Conceived as alternative white tees, they lead to greater satisfaction for the typical golfer with fewer long, forced carries, clearer fairway views, new angles and more opportunities for birdies.

WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE ADVENTURE!  PLEASE GIVE US YOUR COMMENTS.

(At check-in time, you'll be given a separate White Birches scorecard and description sheet to identify the White Birch tees.)

Player's Guide - helpful tips to help you play The Shattuck (the conventional course, not the White Birch Tee Boxes)

Hello, and welcome to The Shattuck Golf Club.  Thank you for visiting us today.  You are about to play one of the most interesting, scenic and challenging golf courses in New England.

This “Player’s Guide” has been prepared to make your round of golf more enjoyable. This beautifully designed course is full of hazards and challenges, not all visible from the teeing ground.  Because of this we have instituted a target system.

A great deal of thought and course knowledge have been put into determining a target spot on each hole, which is marked by a 4 foot tall yellow target post.  These target posts have been placed primarily in the safest, widest part of the fairway landing area.

Each post has been measured via laser from the back edge of each tee box.  This measurement is meant as a guide, leaving the player room to play longer or shorter.  However, playing beyond the post may increase the risk of penalty.  In addition, the yardage is also provided from the target post to the center of each green.  In order to facilitate club selection, players will also find the depth of the green.   Due to the size of the greens, we have found the best course of action is to play to the center of the greens.

The following guide will help you to have an enjoyable round.  The Gold tees are positioned to avoid the hazards and may be best played by beginners or golfers who are not comfortable with carrying the ball for any distance.  The tees requiring the least amount of carry to clear hazard areas are the Red tees (handicaps of 9 to 30).  The maximum required carry in the air is 60 yards.  Players of all abilities will enjoy a challenge from our White tees (handicaps of 14 to 26)  with a maximum carry of 84 yards.  From the Blue tees (handicaps of 4 to 13), players need to be able to carry the ball up to 156 yards in the air to clear some hazard areas from the tee, which probably would supply all the challenge one would like. Even the best professionals have trouble from our great black tees; therefore it is recommended that Black tee players have a handicap of 3 or less.  Players hitting from the black tees will need to carry the ball up to 212 yards in the air to clear hazard areas from the tee. For the most pleasant round of golf, we would advise you to pick the appropriate tees for your ability.

Enjoy your round of golf here at the Shattuck.
Please let us know how we can assist you.  Enjoy your day,

Hole #1 - "Monadnock"

The first is a beautiful yet deceptive starting hole.  A hazard borders the left side of the fairway before crossing diagonally to the right.  The fairway is lined on the right by mounds that will help guide a ball back into the fairway.  This hole plays like more of a dogleg left than it appears from the tee.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
                  Black -                                      240 yds.
Blue (in front of rock ledge) -     225 yds.
                  White -                                      190 yds.
                  Red/Gold -                                140 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is: 167 yds.
The green is 30 yds. deep

 Hole #2 - "Deceiver"

This is a beautiful downhill par 3 with the lake in the background.  Don’t miss the green to the right.  In addition to the bunker, the right side of the green is elevated making any chip shot from that side difficult to stop on the green.  Due to the drop from tee to green, this hole plays on average one club shorter than it’s yardage.  There are six tee boxes

Yardage to center of green is:
                 Black -             201 yds.
                 Blue -               146 yds.
                 White -             130 yds.
                 Red -                107 yds.
                 Gold                 106 yds.
The green is 28 yds. deep

Hole #3 - "Driver's Dilemma"

This par 4 is uphill all the way.  There is a hazard 15 yards past the target post at the left edge of the fairway that is not visible from the tee. Because you cannot see the entire flag on your approach, it is a deceiving shot.  Trust the yardage and allow ½ to 1 club more.  There are bunkers significantly short and left of  the green but should not come into play.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -          234 yds.          Yardage to carry hazard:     212 yds.
      Blue -            178 yds.                                                    156 yds.
      White -          137 yds.
      Red -               53 yds.                                                      84 yds.
      Gold -              38 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is: 153 yds.
The green is 28 yds. deep

Hole #4 - "Dare"

This is a beautiful par 4 that bends around a hazard on the left.  It is tempting to hit a 3 wood or driver, but the fairway tightens between the hazard and the bunkers on the right.  The yardage from the tee to the target post is the same as the yardage to the edge of the hazard.  Therefore, if you play your tee shot short of, or to the target post you have virtually eliminated the threat of the hazard from the tee.  This leaves a manageable approach shot to the green.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -      212 yds.                Yardage to 1st bunker:   239 yds.
         Blue -        163 yds.                                                      189 yds.
         White -      140 yds.                                                      167 yds.
         Red/Gold -  67 yds.                                                        94 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is: 148 yds.
The green is 25 yds. deep

Hole #5 - "The Gauntlet"

This par 5 is considered our signature hole by many players.  All the trouble is left with a hazard running from tee to green before it crosses in front of the green.  Fortunately, the entire right side is elevated and slopes back down to the fairway.  The tendency is to get a little greedy on your second shot.  I recommend the conservative approach by landing your second shot at the 150 yard markers because the penalty strokes can multiply quickly here.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -        288 yds.          To carry hazard from tee:    178 yds.
        Blue -          203 yds.                                                    107 yds.
        White  -       125 yds.                                                      35 yds.
        Red -           120 yds.                                                      30 yds.
        Gold -            90 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to 150 yard markers:  167 yds.
The green is 20 yds. deep

Hole #6 - "Triple Threat"

The second of back-to-back par 5’s, this hole poses potential for trouble on every shot.  An outcropping of rocks on the right makes this a partially blind tee shot with hazards short right, and all down the left side of the hole.  The hazard impedes the fairway in two areas to form separate landing areas for each shot.  As is the case with many holes here at The Shattuck, the conservative approach is your best bet.  Aggressive play here normally leads to a big number.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -       264 yds.            To carry hazard on right:    180 yds.
         Blue -         217 yds.                                                     131 yds.
         White -       125 yds.
         Red/Gold - 120 yds.

Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:                 255 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to second shot target post:     144 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:                  131 yds.
The green is 28 yds. deep

Hole #7 - "Carry"

A healthy par 3 that is all carry from the blue and white tees.  As the green fades away to the left, the required carry increases as well.  The safe place to miss appears to be to the right.  But beware, there is another hazard long to the right.

Yardage to center of green is:
         Black -      200 yds.
         Blue -        183 yds.
         White -      169 yds.
         Red/Gold -  96 yds.  (tee box right/front of water)
The green is 22 yds. deep

Hole #8 - "Squeeze Play"

This par 4 is short but feisty.  You must carry a hazard on your tee shot to a fairway with plenty of room to the left.  There is also room beyond the tee shot target post if you wish to hit it longer.  A hazard runs down the entire right side of the fairway, but is not able to be seen from the tee.  The approach shot to the green must again carry a corner of the hazard to a green that runs slightly away from the fairway.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -       231 yds.   To carry hazard from tee:  181 yds.
            Blue -         205 yds.                                           155 yds.
            White -       185 yds.                                           135 yds.
            Red-             51 yds.                                           117 yds.
            Gold -          48 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:  154 yds.
The green is 27 yds. deep

Hole #9 - "Shattuck Inn"

This par 4 is all uphill and is one of the few holes at The Shattuck where length off the tee is beneficial.  A hazard bordering the left side of the fairway can be taken out of play by driving the ball past it.  There is a hazard 22 yards beyond the tee shot target post but is able to been seen from the tee.  Trust your yardage and add ½ club for uphill approach shot to the green.  There are no bunkers short of the green, but there is one to the right.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black-      260 yds.     To hazard through fairway:       282 yds.
          Blue -       196 yds                                                     218 yds.
          White -     165 yds.                                                    187 yds.
          Red -        160 yds.                                                    182 yds.
          Gold -       105 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:  113 yds.
The green is 29 yds. deep

Hole #10 - "Mountain Draw"

This par 4 offers an uphill tee shot to an elevated fairway before dropping off into a small valley.  There is more room on the right side of the fairway than on the left.  Also, the right side offers the best angle into the green.  The trees on the left can block your shot to the green if you’re not careful.  The fairway target post is set so that it can be seen from all the tee areas.  The ideal tee shot is 30 – 35 yards over the post.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
            Black -            228 yds.
            Blue -              180 yds.
            White -            140 yds.
            Red/Gold -      122 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:   193 yds.
The green is 22 yds. deep

Hole #11 - "Double Cross"

This par 4 requires one of the most challenging tee shots on the entire course.  A hazard lines the entire right side of the fairway before crossing in front of the green.  Several bunkers cut into the side of the hill frame the left side of the fairway creating options for longer hitters.  There is plenty of room past the bunkers, but this forces you to aim slightly right of them where the hazard looms.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
            Black -               263 yds.
            Blue –                224 yds.
            White -              187 yds.
            Red/Gold -        169 yds.
Yardage to carry hazard from fairway target post:         144 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:     171 yds.
The green is 30 yds. deep

Hole #12 - "Waterloo"

This par 3 is the first of The Shattuck’s beautiful “triangle”.  The triangle is comprised of three holes that traverse around a scenic wetland with Mount Monadnock in the background.  With a bank behind the green acting as a backstop, any mistake here should be long.  As the green moves left from the tee, the carry over the hazard increases.

Yardage to center of green is:
              Black -             199 yds.
              Blue -               189 yds.
              White -             155 yds.
              Red -                131 yds.
              Gold -                 90 yds.
The green is 24 yds. deep

Hole #13 - "Temptation"

This par 4 offers both options and temptation.  The fairway sets beautifully below a bank lined with tall pines and hardwoods.  A well-placed tee shot leaves a short approach to the green and an opportunity for birdie.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -          219 yds.      Yardage to carry hazard -    191 yds.
              Blue -            163 yds.                                                  136 yds.
              White -            90 yds.
              Red/Gold -      86 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green:  79 yds.
The green is 30 yds. deep

Hole #14 - "Alcatraz"

This short par 3 is the final hole of the triangle, and not as easy as it’s yardage might make you think.  If you are unsure of what club to use, make sure any mistakes are long.  There is no room for error short of this green.

Yardage to center of green is:
              Black-              156 yds.
              Blue -               120 yds.
              White -             102 yds.
              Red/Gold -         73 yds.
The green is 24 yds. deep

Hole #15 - "Double Trouble"

This par 5 is called “double cross”.  An unconventional par 5, this is not a hole to try and stretch out a tee shot in order to reach the green in two.  This is a true placement hole.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -        237 yds.          Yardage to carry hazard -    153 yds.
        Blue -          190 yds.                                                     131 yds.
        White -        122 yds.                                                       66 yds.
        Red -           120 yds.
        Gold -           66 yds.
Yardage to 2nd hazard through fairway from:
        Black -       315 yds.
        Blue -         268 yds.
        White -       200 yds.
         Red -         198 yds.
         Gold -        148 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to second shot target post -     155 yds.
Yardage from 2nd shot target post to center of green is:              134 yds.
Yardage to carry hazard -                                                          104 yds.
The green is 25 yds. deep

Hole #16 - "Driver's Delight"

This uphill par 4 allows you to unleash one off the tee if you like.  The approach shot to the green is similar to the one on #3, trust your yardage and allow ½ to 1 club more.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -       225 yds.      Yardage to carry hazard -    115 yds.
          Blue -         205 yds.                                                   95 yds.
          White -       155 yds.                                                   53 yds.
          Red -          141 yds.                                                   39 yds.
          Gold -           86 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is: 159 yds.
The green is 30 yds. deep

Hole #17 - "Lay Up"

This is a short but beautiful par 4.  The tendency is to try to cut off some of the hazard on the left, but the smart play is the right-center of the fairway.  You are left with a short uphill shot to a long narrow green.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
Black -       225 yds.        Yardage to carry hazard -    206 yds.
           Blue -         161 yds.                                                   126 yds.
           White -       115 yds.                                                     80 yds.
           Red -          109 yds.                                                     74 yds.
           Gold -           28 yds.
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is:   98 yds.
The green is 32 yds. deep

Hole #18 - "Home"

This is a dangerous par 4 to finish on.  The fairway runs away from the tee and to the left toward the trees.  Some players choose to cut over the right hand rough.  However, if you don’t clear it you are faced with a downhill shot from heavy rough.  Any tee shot past the target post faces a possibility of going thorough the fairway.

Yardage to fairway target post from:
                Black -             219 yds.
                Blue -               180 yds.
                White -             117 yds.
                Red/Gold -       111 yds.
There are 70 yds. of fairway beyond the fairway target post
Yardage from fairway target post to center of green is: 166 yds.
The green is 30 yds. deep
